Price Rises - September 2026

Good afternoon,

In response to the US/Israeli invasion of Iran and the sustained rise in fuel prices around the world, we raised our prices by 15% in May. At the time, I expressed hope that this would be the last rise we’d have to implement for a long time, since the looming fertiliser crisis should have a limited effect on organic businesses. Unfortunately, while that price rise kept us from shuttering in an immediate crisis, it was insufficient to absorb a further significant increase in refrigerated haulage costs over Summer, which have accounted for about 20% of our entire quarterly budget.

While the worst of the heat seems to have abated and we can anticipate a modest decrease in our haulage fees, we find ourselves in a very challenging cash position and I’m afraid we must increase prices by another 15% - though this will be restricted to our Big Organic and Small Organic Veg Boxes only. This price rise will take effect on September 9th, two weeks today, for boxes delivered on the subsequent week (16th, 17th, 18th & 19th September). Our new Big and Small Organic Veg Box prices will be £40 and £23, respectively.

I appreciate that for some of you, this rise will prevent you from ordering from us as often, or even at all, but we intend for it to happen in conjunction with a marked increase in sales, keeping expense for you as low as we feel we can manage. I must stress too that we’ve done as much as we can to reduce our costs over the warmer months, including significantly reducing staff hours. Additionally, though I seek no personal sympathy, my family and I have taken no income from the business at all since we began.

One thing I am sure of is that we have a large group of very satisfied customers - we’ve been trading just over a year and have exclusively 5-star google reviews, not to mention countless emails and interactions with Sammy, Stephen or I at your doorsteps expressing happiness with our produce and service. Of course, we don’t always get it right, but we try to be as honest as we can when things don’t go to plan and we always offer a credit or refund where liability is at all ours. The truth is that the only way for us to be sustainable is by increasing our prices, as well as a concurrent increase in new customer orders.

On that point - if you are like me, over the course of the last year or so you’ve eaten a mouthful of fruit or veg from Moss Organics and said to your dining companion, “wow - this is a really good carrot/plum/potato/apple!” We are the only organic greengrocers in the Borders and we are the only ones here sourcing that outstanding produce. As we emphasise on social media a lot, many of the suppliers we work with also work with Michelin-starred restaurants - when we say we source exceptional fruit and veg, I really don’t think it gets much better. So if you’ve ever had a fleeting thought that there’s someone in the Borders who would really enjoy one of our veg boxes - let them know! 84% of customers who have ever ordered a veg box with us become regular subscribers. That is a huge achievement and testament to the fact that our customers really like what we do - we’ve just got to make it work for us all, for the long run.

I’m sorry to have to write to you with less positive news for once, but please believe - we love what we do, we genuinely feel connected to our customers and we want to be delivering Organic fruit and veg in the Borders for many years to come - this is the only way.

As ever, thank you for your continued custom - all the very best.
Ewan
