Seasonal • Organic • Local

We have a simple rule of thumb to help guide our decision making when sourcing produce - S.O.L. Food

Our Sourcing Philosophy

Seasonal

We follow the rhythm of the year and never buy produce that has been forced to grow out of place - when fruit and veg is in season

it tastes better and keeps longer - you can taste the difference.

Organic

Everything we source is handled to strict organic standards - we have a rigorous system to prove that nothing we pack is grown with synthesised pesticides or fertilisers, and has been certified organic.

We’re a proud SOPA-certified organic processor (Scottish Organic Producers Association), which means every step of our buying, storage, and operations are inspected and approved annually.

Local

We prioritise sourcing from growers in the Scottish Borders and across Scotland, before looking elsewhere in Britain, then abroad.

Naturally, certain fruit and veg cannot be grown in the UK and in these instances we buy from trusted, organic-certified importers who adhere to the same rigorous standards that we do.

S.O.L isn't a strict rule, but it is a firm guide in the decisions we make.

Sometimes the right choice costs more - we’ll happily pick the pricier local cucumber over a cheaper imported one, for

example - but it makes buying decisions simpler.

What does Organic mean?

"Organic" is a legally-protected term denoting fruit and veg that has been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, but organic farming is about more than leaving things out - it’s about healthy, living soil, thriving wildlife and biodiversity, and farming that works in balance with nature.

Organic growing treats the land as a living system — using rotations, rest, compost and organisms in the soil rather than chemical intervention — which means slower growing crops that develop fuller flavour, better structure, and better natural shelf life, even where that means lower yields.

But...we aren't farmers. So what does being organic mean for Moss Organics?

It's an ethos.

In choosing to be organic we choose openness over cleverness, transparency over opacity, integrity over efficiency.

We believe that when we build our business with nothing to hide, quality will organically flow — from the produce we sell to our customer service and the quality of our lives. By choosing organic, you’re supporting growers who nurture their land for the long term — so your food is high-quality, flavourful, and part of a more sustainable food system.

We are proud SOPA-certified organic processors, which means that you can have full trust in the contents of your box.
