Spring Newsletter

Goodbye Winter!

Over the past few months we’ve been reliant on our friends Chapel Organics in North Berwick for the bulk of our selection of vegetables - their roots and brassicas have been on heavy rotation in your boxes and we truly believe that they are producing some of the best vegetables - particularly carrots - in Scotland.

As Spring settles in, you should have already noticed a shift in your boxes: more colour, more variety, more leaves - and fewer swedes and celeriac! Of course, we’ll see those firm favourites again when the clocks change in October, but it is time for some fresh energy.

Price Increases

Regrettably, given the continuing war in Iran and the associated rise in fuel costs, we have been faced with no choice but to raise our box prices. Not only are we paying noticeably more for diesel in our delivery vans every time we refuel, but the price of producing and transporting fruit and veg has increased for our suppliers and logistics partners, which is passed on to us.

As we only buy imported stock where necessary, our focus on sourcing local where possible should insulate us somewhat from the worst of increased fuel costs during longer-term global instability, and volatility in the global fertiliser market should have limited effect on an organic business like ours. So while things seem unpredictable in global affairs at the moment, we hope that this regrettable price rise will be our last for a long while.

From May 1st, our Big Organic Veg Box will cost £35, our Small Organic Veg Box £20, and our Organic Fruit Box £14.50 - an increase of around 15%. This decision is not taken lightly - things are expensive for everyone and we recognise that we are all paying more at the pumps - but we must run sustainably.

We are growing - organically

Moss Organics is entering what we think of as “phase two” of the life of our business. If “phase one” was about getting the ball rolling and proving that there were enough people in the Borders interested in organic veg - “phase two” is about growth, but this must be done in in the right way.

It’s easy to let quality of product and quality of service slip in these moments - that’s not what being organic is about to us - so we are taking these next steps very carefully.

We’re interviewing this week and hope to have a new face on the team shortly - this will give us time to take a breather after a long slog and focus on “bigger picture” projects.

Changes to our
Add-Ons

You may have noticed that we’ve discontinued our Seasoning Bag.

It didn’t sell as much as our other products and we ended up wasting a lot of fresh herbs as a result.

Instead, we now offer individual add-ons like lemons, garlic, and ginger. Keep an eye out for time-limited and seasonal ‘Add-Ons’ as well!
