Organic Greengrocer: Part Time (~10hrs/week)

About Us
Moss Organics is a veg box subscription service delivering the very best in certified-organic fruit, veg and eggs to rural subscribers in the Scottish Borders. We are certified by SOPA (the Scottish Organic Producers Association) and we are the only greengrocers in the Borders with organic certification. We work with a small handful of certified-organic producers and importers, buying Scottish or British where we can and prioritising small-scale farming where we can, in accordance with our S.O.L. Food philosophy.

The purpose of Moss Organics is to bring great produce to an area under-served by it, to promote organic values, and to be synonymous with reliability and friendliness in the Scottish Borders.

The Role
Our work can be challenging at times, but there is a fundamental purpose to what we are doing. Some days involve heavy lifting, problem-solving, and driving in rough weather - but others are more relaxed, with good coffee and good music. Shifts are hard work, but there is always good chat, good vibes, and we are doing something that is good for everyone - people and planet.

Starting in April, the role will be around 10 hours per week - half days on Mondays and Tuesdays, with a blend of unloading and packing in the unit and delivering on the road. You are joining the business in order to give us time and space to increase sales, so you should anticipate adding hours and responsibilities to your role and a degree of flexibility will be expected of you as a result. We are reasonably flexible in return - you can work hours that suit another job, for instance, and we encourage healthy balance between work and life.

You will be:

Based in Tweedbank, about 10 minutes’ walk from the train station.

Unloading stock - up to 500kg of palletised fruit and veg at a time, several days per week, carrying loads of up to 25kg at a time (e.g. sacks of veg or emptied pallets) - appropriate physical strength is essential.

Packing veg boxes in a presentable manner - we are a premium business and appearances matter.

Following organic procedures for traceability - organic certification is what makes us unique in the Borders and we are audited on this annually, so we are very strict on protocol and paperwork - it’s boring, but you’ll get used to it!

Delivering up to 50 boxes per shift in a branded company van. Amazon or DPD drivers do 150–200 deliveries per day and you’ll be doing a fraction of that in a fraction of the distance, through some of the most beautiful landscape in the country while delivering stuff you can really believe in.

Collecting stock from suppliers - farms and wholesalers in the Borders, East Lothian, and the Central Belt.

Walking up and down driveways, stairs, and paths carrying customer’s orders - sometimes it will be wet, muddy, or icy, particularly in rural Scottish Winters. We will provide you with appropriate footwear and other relevant PPE.

Interacting with customers on their doorsteps - community connection is essential to what we are doing and meandering chats on the doorstep are factored into our business plan.

Representing the business with friendliness and professionalism - you're part of the company, even on your days off.

You Are

  • Physically capable of lifting, crouching, carrying awkward loads, and working in varied conditions and temperatures (Winter gets cold at Moss Organics…).
  • A confident van driver with a clean (manual) UK driving licence - no exceptions.
  • 25 or older - we frequently rent vans.
  • Based in the Borders - you will be serving your own community and can expect to bump into customers in the street or in the pub after a couple of months.
  • Friendly and outgoing; being a person who genuinely cares about other people is essential – strictly no misanthropes.
  • A problem-solver. Sometimes it’s hard to find a customer’s home (there are no house numbers in Bowden, for example) so you’ll need to have the confidence to work out the best solution for them in tricky situations.
  • Reliable and attentive to detail - especially with food safety, food presentation, and organic standards. When packing a lot of boxes on a busy morning it is easy to go “veg blind” and miss an item in someone’s box or fail to spot spoiled produce. Our customers pay premium prices for premium products and it costs when we mess up - not just financially.
  • Passionate about good food, healthy living, local produce, and the Scottish Borders.

What You’ll Get

  • A starting rate of £14/hr (10% above Scottish Borders living wage).
  • A contract.
  • Full training — including organic standards and food safety certification.
  • Free weekly veg box.
  • Free branded clothing (t-shirts, hats, jumpers).
  • Free PPE or PPE budget (you will need footwear with steel toecaps).
  • Incentives and progression as we grow - we are a young business, have ambitious plans, and you are expected to play an important role in our future.
  • A workplace designed around good vibes and hard graft - we are chilled people who enjoy each other’s company, but we are very focussed on doing our work well.

How to Apply
What you studied at uni or what you got in your Highers are not relevant to the role, so a CV is not essential. Instead, please send a short email with some info about yourself, things you are enthusiastic about, and any relevant work experience to [email protected]. We would strongly prefer one employer’s reference. Our ad will run for two weeks, and we won’t reply until then (3rd April). Unless we are inundated with applications, we will reply to everyone.
